did you see that fox has cut the number of screens for opening weekend by more than half? they claim that, like much of america, the movie is "soft on awareness." (if it not do well, he will be execute.)

Hi Matt - liked your "soft on awareness" joke :)

You want to know what I really think? I think media is stupid, doesn't think things through, and jumps to conclusions. They saw one movie with big internet buzz that crashed and burned, and now they see another movie with big internet buzz, so clearly it will also die at the box office - especially with Fox opening it slowly.

I also think no one knows anything.

I do think that Fox is hedging their bets, since it's a cheap film to make, and it costs less to put a movie in 800 screens than 3000 (a la Snakes on a Plane).

I do think that this internet buzz around Borat is more organic... more of a "want to see" excitement, rather than pointing and laughing at the meta-ness of Snakes on a Plane.

I'm also betting that this is probably the funniest film of the year, and word of mouth will spread for this movie. I'm not saying $100 million, but I am saying major success for Fox. Was anyone talking about the quality of Snakes on a Plane after it was released? Nope. Thus... death.

To me, it comes down to this - it's the movie. If it's good, people will tell others about it, the theater count will increase, etc.

To paraphrase David Poland: Opening weekend is always a reflection of the quality of your marketing. After that, it's a reflection of the quality of your film.

Or, I'm wrong, but at least I won't be execute ;)

Man, blooming google has gone and removed one of the funniest videos on youtube just because NBC couldn't handle Conan being embarrassed so badly. You can plainly see Conan can't handle it and just a week or so later, down it comes. Pathetic, by both NBC and Google...
