Here's another pretty good recap of Oscar night, with a breakdown of exactly why it felt safe to vote for Million Dollar Baby, and some insight into something I noticed early in the broadcast...
One of the things that struck me about the show was the large number of reaction shots of Oprah Winfrey, seated in the audience. Is Oprah, the queen of talk shows, some kind of a collective conscience of the American public? A morally restraining figure? A surrogate mother who needs to give a continuous approval to a son who might be too risky and dangerous?
What was the joke "Oprah, Uma, Uma, Oprah" about anyways? I dont get it! What did Letterman mean by that?? Fill me in!!

He just thought that the words sounded funny. Nothing more than that - typical Letterman goofiness. :)
